You will need to be able to generate speed in the first place to be able to convert that into good turns. The main way of generating speed is to use the power of your wave. Using the speed of dropping into the wave , climbing up ,and dropping back down your wave, you incorporate compression and decompression of your body to help this process. Put your weight on your back foot when climbing up the wave and then transfer weight to your front foot as you push the board back down the wave. Compress down low into your bottom turn and as you point your board back up the the wave start decompression, when you reach the top of the wave you compress and decompress as you go back down and so on. Of course the wave will decide a lot of this. If you take off on a wave with a fast section you will stay more in the middle of the wave doing short sharp turns but still using compression to help you get the speed you need.
